Hello.

I’m rebranding my blog to focus more on films. I’ll be writing reviews, reactions to award shows, controversies (?), and theories. I also might post/have posted my opinions, stories, screenplays, travels, etc. I hope you enjoy my work!

Golden Globes 2021: Predictions and Reactions

Golden Globes 2021: Predictions and Reactions

Hello and welcome to my predictions and responses to the Golden Globes 2021. Without having as much produced this year in Hollywood in comparison to past seasons, it is interesting (cough cough Emily in Paris and Music cough couch) what the globes nominated this year for their categories. I will be giving my predictions for who I want to and think will win, a possible alternative, and responses to the winners of different categories. (All of my predictions are highly opinionated and it is important to remember that I have not seen every show and movie that appears on this list.) Emily in Paris and Music slander is very much tolerated, if not expected, on my blog.

Best Motion Picture - Drama

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Nomadland

Who Could Possibly Win: The Trial of The Chicago 7

It is such a toss up between Nomadland and The Trial of The Chicago 7 that it honestly makes me think that The Father could swoop in and take the award.

Who Won: Nomadland

And as the last award closes the night, Nomadland takes the cake for the Best Motion Picture - Drama. I had no idea which way they were going to go but congrats to all of the movies in this category, especially Nomadland.

Best Performance By An Actress In A Motion Picture - Drama

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Carey Mulligan - Promising Young Woman

Who Could Possibly Win: Frances McDormand - Nomadland

Who Won: Andra Day - The United States vs. Billie Holiday

Honestly I’m kind of surprised by this pick, but I’m not mad at the win. I did think for sure it was going to Mulligan or McDormand before any of the other nominees.

Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture - Drama

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Chadwick Boseman - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Who Could Possibly Win: Riz Ahmed - Sound of Metal

I find it highly unlikely to go to anybody other than Boseman, deservedly so, but if it does I think Ahmed is a good choice and should win if he wasn’t up against Boseman.

Who Won: Chadwick Boseman - Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

I don’t think anybody is really shocked by this choice but I’m really glad that he won; he deserved the award.

Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Borat 2

Who Could Possibly Win: Hamilton

As Much As I Love Hamilton, I Really Hope It Doesn’t Win (Not More Than I Hope That Music Doesn’t Win)

Who Won: Borat 2

Best Performance By An Actress In A Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Maria Bakalova - Borat 2

Who Could Possibly Win: Rosamund Pike - I Care A Lot

Who Won: Rosamund Pike - I Care A Lot

Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Sacha Baron Cohen - Borat 2

Who Could Possibly Win: Lin-Manuel Miranda - Hamilton

Andy Samberg in Palm Springs is also a great choice for an alternative, however I think Miranda has a better chance over Samberg in the category.

Who Won: Sacha Baron Cohen - Borat 2

Best Motion Picture - Animated

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Soul

Who Could Possibly Win: Onward

No other movie in the category compares to soul.

Who Won: Soul

Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Minari

Who Could Possibly Win: La Llorona

Who Won: Minari

Best Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Olivia Colman - The Father

Who Could Possibly Win: Glenn Close - Hillbilly Elegy

Close is an amazing actress and globe favorite, but this movie was dog shit in every other way so I think Colman has a strong chance of winning (maybe even Seyfried?)

Who Won: Jodie Foster - The Mauritanian

Very surprised by this win because I didn’t even hear any scuttle about her winning in any film critic/review/enthusiasts groups I pay attention to.

Best Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Daniel Kaluuya - Judas and The Black Messiah

Who Could Possibly Win: Leslie Odom, Jr. - One Night in Miami

Who Won: Daniel Kaluuya - Judas and The Black Messiah

Best Director - Motion Picture

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Chloe Zhao - Nomadland

Who Could Possibly Win: Aaron Sorkin - The Trial of the Chicago 7

Who Won: Chloe Zhao - Nomadland

Best Screenplay - Motion Picture

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Chloe Zhao - Nomadland

Who Could Possibly Win: Aaron Sorkin - The Trial of the Chicago 7

Who Won: Aaron Sorkin - The Trial of the Chicago 7

I haven’t seen the movie The Trial of the Chicago 7, but I do know that Sorkin is a great writer and Nomadland isn’t the most profound piece of screenwriting (it strives more in cinematography, acting, thematic concepts, and direction - this makes it a difficult toss up of who is winning best picture).

Best Original Score - Motion Picture

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste - Soul

Who Could Possibly Win: Ludwig Guransson - Tenet

Who Won: Trent Renor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste - Soul

Best Original Song - Motion Picture

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Speak Now - One Night In Miami

Who Could Possibly Win: Fight For You - Judas and The Black Messiah

I picked these out of my own personal taste, not from a music critic lens.

Who Won: Lo Si - The Life Ahead

A bit upset by the win but I think that is just because I liked the other songs more because they match my music taste.

Best Television Series - Drama

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: The Crown

Who Could Possibly Win: Ozark

Who Won: The Crown

Best Performance By An Actress In A Television Series - Drama

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Olivia Colman - The Crown

Who Could Possibly Win: Sarah Paulson - Ratched (No other reasoning behind this besides the fact that I love Sarah Paulson)

Who Won: Emma Corin - The Crown

Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series - Drama

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Jason Bateman - Ozark

Who Could Possibly Win: Josh O’Connor - The Crown

I have a very hard time seeing this award going to anybody else but Bateman and would be utterly shocked if it went to anybody else.

Who Won: Josh O’Connor - The Crown

Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Schitt’s Creek

Who Could Possibly Win: The Great

No other show has had as much traction as Schitt’s Creek, and just like Borat 2, I think it might be a clean sweep.

Who Won: Schitt’s Creek

Best Performance By An Actress In A Television Series - Musical or Comedy

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Catherine O’Hara - Schitt’s Creek

Who Could Possibly Win: Lily Collins - Emily in Paris

I hate Emily in Paris, but I find Lily Collins to be an amazing actress and found the problem of the show to lie more in the directing and writing than in the acting. I also think that this would be a funny win and stir up some chaos among the film/television community.

Who Won: Catherine O’Hara - Schitt’s Creek

I don’t think anybody is surprised by this decision, nobody else compared to her performance and it is a pleasing goodbye since the series ended.

Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series - Musical or Comedy

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Eugene Levy - Schitt's Creek

Who Could Possibly Win: Don Cheadle - Black Monday (No other reasoning behind this besides the fact that I love Don Cheadle)

Who Won: Jason Sudeikis - Ted Lasso

Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made For Television

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: The Queen’s Gambit

Who Could Possibly Win: Unorthodox

So many good shows are up for nominations and makes it one of the few categories that is actually difficult to decide who I think will win. I went with The Queen’s Gambit because it was one my favorite things I watched this past year and created the most buzz around itself.

Who Won: The Queen’s Gambit

Best Performance By An Actress In A Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made For Television

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Anya Taylor-Joy - The Queen’s Gambit

Who Could Possibly Win: Nicole Kidman - The Undoing

Who Won: Anya Taylor-Joy - The Queen’s Gambit

I was going to be really mad if Joy didn’t win; I can’t wait to see what she does next with her acting career (I believe she has a new movie coming out soon).

Best Performance By An Actor In A Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made For Television

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Hugh Grant - The Undoing

Who Could Possibly Win: Mark Ruffalo - I Know This Much Is True

Not as much buzz in this category as there is in the actress, the only name I’ve seen really thrown around is Grant’s and Ruffalo’s (the latter mainly from MCU fans).

Who Won: Mark Ruffalo - I Know This Much Is True

I still think that Grant should have won but I do love Ruffalo in everything he does so I’m going to walk away from this category pleased.

Best Performance By An Actress In A Television Supporting Role

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Gillian Anderson - The Crown

Who Could Possibly Win: Julia Garner - Ozark

Who Won: Gillian Anderson - The Crown

Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Supporting Role

Who I Want To/Think Will Win: Daniel Levy - Schitt’s Creek

Who Could Possibly Win: Donald Sutherland - The Undoing

Who Won: John Boyega - Small Axe

I’m honestly very surprised by this choice, I actually thought Boyega was the least likely to get this role (I haven’t seen his performance but it had the least amount of buzz around his performance in comparison to the other actors).

Overall, I think the Golden Globes went fairly well and not a whole lot of snubs on the list. The HFPA definitely tried to fall in line with what the internet did not want to win and they were at the very least brave (regardless of how forced it felt) to openly admit their wrongdoings when it comes to the lack of diversity on their board of members - I’m not the one to accept their apology though.

In terms of how I did with guessing who was going to win, I got 14/25 (56%) and including the alternatives being winners I got 17/25 (68%). I would say that’s fairly good for my first time guessing; hopefully as the award season continues I’ll improve on making bets.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you guys soon!
